DC315 Paint in Canada: 5-Gallon Pail Material Cost vs. Turnkey Certified Application Cost in Ontario (2026 Guide)

DC315 Paint in Canada: 2026 Ontario Overview & Code Essentials
Every week across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Hamilton, and Ontario, commercial general contractors, metal building owners, and homeowners search "where to buy DC315 paint in Canada" after a municipal building official flags exposed spray polyurethane foam in a commercial warehouse, industrial bay, shipping container, mechanical room, or crawl space. On paper, ordering 5-gallon pails of IFTI DC315® from a specialty Canadian distributor and handing them to a site labourer or house painter looks like an easy shortcut. In reality, uncertified pail-and-roller application is the number-one reason spray foam fire barriers fail 2026 Ontario Building Code occupancy inspections—forcing property owners to pay twice after buying materials they could not legally certify.
Because IFTI DC315® is an engineered life-safety assembly regulated under CCMC Evaluation Report #14036-R and CAN/ULC-S124, municipal inspectors do not sign off on empty paint pails. They demand a monolithic 18.0-mil Wet Film Thickness (12.0-mil Dry Film Thickness) applied via a 3,000+ PSI commercial airless rig, timestamped wet/dry mil thickness logs, drum batch records, and a signed contractor compliance binder. At Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc., our Caliber Certified (CAN/ULC-S705.2 Licensed) Installers and IFTI Certified DC315 fire coating crews deliver turnkey certified application for virtually the same net cost as buying retail pails, renting equipment, and paying general labour—plus our Single-Source Turnkey 2 lb Closed-Cell SPF + 18-Mil DC315 Package saves 20% to 30% on new insulation scopes. Get a $250 Credit on Your Estimate — Check Your Price in 60 Seconds (/price-chat) • No Site Visit Required, or contact our General Contractor & B2B Estimating Desk.

2026 DC315 5-Gallon Pail Material Price vs. Turnkey Certified Installed Cost Per Sq Ft in Ontario
In 2026, retail Canadian supply houses price a 5-gallon (18.9 L) pail of IFTI DC315® between $525 and $695 CAD before HST and temperature-controlled LTL freight. While the theoretical flat-surface coverage at 18 mils Wet Film Thickness (12 mils DFT) is 89 sq ft per US gallon (445 sq ft per 5-gallon pail), spraying over contoured polyurethane foam texture reduces real-world yield by 12% to 20% (355 to 390 sq ft per pail). That means raw paint material alone costs $1.35 to $1.95 per sq ft before you factor in a 3,000+ PSI pump rental, masking poly, scissor lifts, or labour. Compare that against our wholesale-backed DC315 fire coating cost in Ontario and turnkey warehouse spray foam + DC315 package:
| DC315 Procurement & Installation Option | 2026 Material / Unit Cost | Equipment, Masking & Labour Included | Real-World All-In Cost (/sq ft) | Municipal Inspector Sign-Off Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Retail 5-Gallon Pail Supply Only(DIY / Uncertified Painter) | $525 – $695 / 5-gal pail($1.35 – $1.95 / sq ft raw paint) | None(Must rent 3,000 PSI rig + buy poly + lifts) | $2.10 – $3.40 / sq ft(After rental, waste & labour) | Fails Occupancy(No certified applicator log or DFT sign-off) |

Why Municipal Building Inspectors in Ontario Reject Uncertified DIY Rolling & Brush Application
When a property owner or general contractor receives a failed spray foam fire inspection order in Ontario, buying 5-gallon pails of DC315 online and rolling them with a standard 3/8" or 3/4" nap paint roller almost always triggers a second deficiency notice. Here is a transparent breakdown of why uncertified DIY pail-and-roller jobs fail municipal inspection compared to our certified turnkey installation:
| Inspection & Technical Metric | Buying 5-Gal Pails + DIY / General Painter Rolling | Certified 18-Mil DC315 Application (Sprayfoam Solutions) | Single-Source Turnkey 2 lb SPF + 18-Mil DC315 Package |
|---|---|---|---|
Wet & Dry Film Thickness Achieved | 4 to 8 Mils WFT on Foam Peaks(Sags in valleys; fails 12-mil DFT pin test) | 18.0–24.0 Mils WFT ( 12.0–16.0 Mils DFT)(Uniform single high-build pass) | Smooth ≤2.0" SPF Lifts + Uniform 18-Mil WFT DC315 |
Pump Pressure & Atomization | Standard roller or weak 1,500 PSI homeowner sprayer(clogs tips) | 3,000–3,300 PSI Commercial Airless( ≥1.25 GPM, 0.019" – 0.023" tip) | Heated Proportioner Reactor + 3,000+ PSI Airless Fleet |
Foam Brand Compatibility Proof | Unknown / mismatched to existing bare foam brand | Verified against CCMC #14036-R & UL ER19731 tables | 100% Matched( BASF / Huntsman / JM + IFTI DC315) |
Pail Consumption & Material Waste | 25%–35% Waste(Heavy roller stipple & rough foam texture) | Wholesale Fleet Pricing(Controlled atomization yield) | 15%–20% Less DC315 Needed(Knocked-down smooth SPF pass) |
Municipal Inspector Sign-Off Binder | None(Inspector rejects unverified thickness & pails) | Full Binder: WFT Photos + Elcometer DFT Log + Cert Letter | Unified CAN/ULC-S705.2 Foam + CAN/ULC-S124 Fire Binder |

Why Our Single-Source Turnkey 2 lb Closed-Cell SPF + 18-Mil DC315 Package Beats Buying Pails & Hiring Separate Sub-Trades
If your project has not been sprayed yet—or if you are pricing commercial warehouse insulation, a metal building, a shipping container, or an exposed mechanical ceiling—booking our Single-Source Turnkey 2 lb Closed-Cell SPF + 18-Mil DC315 Package eliminates the five biggest hidden costs of buying pails or splitting the contract:
- 1. Wholesale Drum & Container-Load Chemical Pricing vs. Retail Pail Markups: Retail distributors mark up individual 5-gallon pails of IFTI DC315® by 30% to 45% and add
$180–$350in heated winter LTL freight. Because Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc. purchases thermal barrier coatings by the pallet load, our turnkey installed rate ($1.75–$3.25/sq ft) often matches what a small contractor would spend on retail pails, pump rental, and labour alone. - 2. Smooth-Pass 2 lb Closed-Cell Foam Technique Cuts Coating Consumption by 15%–20%: When a standalone insulation company sprays rough, orange-peel or popcorn-textured polyurethane foam, surface area expands by up to 30%—swallowing extra pails of expensive DC315. Our Caliber Certified (CAN/ULC-S705.2 Licensed) Installers spray smooth, tight-cell passes (
≤2.0"per lift) specifically engineered to receive our18-mil WFTthermal barrier without material overage. - 3. One Scissor-Lift Rental & One Polyethylene Masking Setup (Saves $2,500 – $9,500+): In commercial bays and high-ceiling warehouses, masking ESFR sprinkler heads, overhead doors, crane rails, and concrete floors plus renting
26-ft to 45-ftscissor lifts accounts for nearly a third of project cost. Our turnkey crew masks once and uses the same lift staging for both theCAN/ULC-S705.1foam pass and theCAN/ULC-S124fire coating pass. - 4. Pre-Verified Chemical-to-Coating Listing Match (
CCMC #14036-R): Under Canadian building code, a thermal barrier coating is only legal if it has been fire-tested over the exact brand and density of spray foam installed. We install approved CAN/ULC-S705.1 foams (BASF Walltite® Eco v.3, Huntsman Building Solutions (Icynene/Demilec), Johns Manville & other approved CCMC spray foam chemicals — Low-VOC HFO Blown) paired directly with tested thermal barriers (IFTI DC315® (CCMC #14036-R), No-Burn® Plus ThB, Flame Control No. 60-60A & other approved CAN/ULC-S124 thermal barrier coatings). - 5. Single-Source Warranty & Zero Cross-Trade Blame: If a general painter rolls or sprays DC315 over another contractor’s foam and the coating blisters, peels, or fails an inspector’s pin-gauge check, the painter blames the foam while the foam contractor blames the paint. With Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc., one licensed engineering team warrants the entire insulated and fire-rated envelope.
CCMC #14036-R, CAN/ULC-S124 & 3,000+ PSI Commercial Airless Rig Requirements in Canada
Unlike ordinary architectural latex paint, fire retardant paint for spray foam in Canada is a high-solids (67% volume solids), heavy-bodied intumescent fire protection compound. Under 2026 Ontario Building Code Division B Section 3.1.4.2 (Part 3 Commercial/Industrial) and Section 9.10.17.10 (Part 9 Residential/Small Buildings), IFTI DC315® must be applied in strict accordance with its CCMC #14036-R and CAN/ULC-S124 test parameters to achieve a 15-minute thermal barrier rating equivalent to 1/2" gypsum drywall (see our DC315 vs. Drywall Cost Comparison).
5-Gallon Pail Coverage Math: 67% Volume Solids, 18 Mils WFT to 12 Mils DFT & Theoretical vs. Real-World Yield
One of the most common mistakes contractors make when calculating how many 5-gallon pails of DC315 to buy is dividing their building’s flat blueprint square footage by the theoretical smooth-board coverage rate (445 sq ft per 5-gallon pail at 18 mils WFT). Because spray-applied polyurethane foam has natural ripples, Flute contours, and rib depth—and because high-pressure spraying creates 5% to 8% atomization loss—real-world coverage over CAN/ULC-S705.1 2 lb closed-cell foam averages 355 to 390 sq ft per 5-gallon pail (71 to 78 sq ft per gallon). Furthermore, municipal building inspectors check pail consumption math against your total sprayable square footage: if a 4,000 sq ft warehouse only has receipts for 6 pails instead of the required 10 to 11 pails, the inspector immediately knows the coating is under-applied below the mandatory 12.0-mil Dry Film Thickness (18.0-mil WFT) threshold.

What Municipal Inspectors Require Beyond the Paint Pail: CCMC #14036-R, Calibrated Elcometer DFT Logs & Applicator Sign-Off
Across Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Oakville, Burlington, and Hamilton, municipal building inspectors and Fire Prevention Officers require a formal Thermal Barrier Compliance Package before lifting an Order to Comply or issuing occupancy. Every certified installation by Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc. includes our 4-part Municipal Inspector Sign-Off Binder:
- 1. Official CCMC #14036-R & CAN/ULC-S124 Listing Matrix: Highlighted evaluation report pages proving that IFTI DC315® is tested and certified at 18 mils WFT (
12 mils DFT) over your specific spray foam chemical brand (BASF Walltite Eco v.3,Huntsman,Johns Manville). - 2. Timestamped Wet Film Thickness (WFT) Notch-Gauge Photos: During airless application, our technicians press calibrated steel WFT combs into the wet coating every
500 sq ftand photograph the18–20 milreading alongside structural grid markers. - 3. Cured Dry Film Thickness (
≥12.0 Mils DFT) & Pail Lot Log: Once cured (24 hours), we record digital pin-gauge / Elcometer dry-film measurements, document the exact number of 5-gallon pails consumed against total surface area, and log manufacturer batch numbers and expiry dates. - 4. Signed Certified Applicator Warranty & Compliance Letter: Official corporate sign-off on Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc. letterhead confirming compliance with OBC Division B Section 3.1.4.2 / Section 9.10.17.10 and CAN/ULC-S124 (plus CAN/ULC-S705.2 Daily Work Records on turnkey foam + fire packages).
Water-based, low-VOC (<50 g/L) intumescent compound.
Heated warehouse & heated box-truck transport in winter.
Chemically stable, fully cured, and odourless in 24 hrs.
Because IFTI DC315 is a water-borne intumescent emulsion, a single freeze event in an unheated LTL courier truck during an Ontario winter permanently ruins the intumescent resin in a $600 5-gallon pail. We store all DC315 inventory in climate-controlled warehousing, transport pails in heated rigs, and power-mix every pail with a heavy-duty paddle mixer for 5+ minutes before pumping.
6 Critical Trade Rules for Applying IFTI DC315 Over Spray Polyurethane Foam in Ontario
Whether we are rescuing an existing bare-foam project or executing a 20,000 sq ft turnkey commercial warehouse spray foam + DC315 package, our Caliber Certified (CAN/ULC-S705.2 Licensed) Installers and IFTI Certified crews enforce six strict technical rules on every jobsite:
- 1. Never Thin or Dilute a 5-Gallon Pail of DC315 With Water: Uncertified painters using undersized sprayers often add water to make DC315 pump through a small hose. Adding water destroys the
67% volume solidsratio, causes vertical runs at10 mils WFT, and invalidates CCMC #14036-R. Always power-mix each 5-gallon pail with a mechanical Jiffy-style mixer at400–600 RPMfor 5 minutes to shear-thin the thixotropic compound naturally. - 2. Use a ≥3,000 PSI Commercial Airless Pump (
≥1.25 GPM) With Filters Removed: IFTI DC315® contains active intumescent fire-retardant solids that will clog standard 60-mesh or 100-mesh gun and manifold filters. We operate heavy-duty commercial airless rigs (Graco Mark V / TexSprayorGH-seriesclass) at3,000–3,300 PSIwith3/8" IDwhip hoses and0.019" to 0.023"reversible spray tips. - 3. Enforce the Mandatory 24-Hour Spray Foam Exothermic Cure Window: Never spray water-based DC315 over freshly applied polyurethane foam on the same day. Closed-cell 2 lb spray foam must cure and cool for at least 24 hours so internal exothermic reaction heat dissipates before sealing the surface with an
18-millatex film. - 4. Protect Pails From Freezing & Maintain Substrate Temperature ≥10°C (50°F): Both during transit and throughout the 24-hour drying cycle, IFTI DC315® must be kept above
10°C (50°F)with relative humidity<65%and substrate temperature at least3°C (5°F)above the dew point. In Ontario winters, we deploy indirect-fired heaters and dehumidifiers to maintain ideal curing physics. - 5. Clean Dusty, Oxidized or UV-Yellowed Bare Spray Foam Before Topcoating: If existing bare spray foam has sat exposed in a warehouse, basement, or sea-can for months, UV light and airborne dust create a friable, chalky skin that causes DC315 to peel. We wire-brush or mechanically scarify oxidized UV foam, vacuum all dust, and verify adhesion via a cross-hatch tape test before full application.
- 6. Select the Right Factory Colour (Bright White, Ice Grey, Charcoal Grey or Dark Black): Ordering factory-tinted pails eliminates the need for a separate architectural topcoat. Specify Bright White or Ice Grey in warehouses, mechanical rooms, and garages to boost LED lighting reflectance, or Charcoal Grey / Dark Black in retail ceilings, restaurants, and exposed commercial plenums.

Frequently Asked Questions
In 2026, buying a single 5-gallon (18.9 L) pail of IFTI DC315® from a Canadian supply distributor costs $525 to $695 CAD plus HST and heated freight ($1.35 to $1.95/sq ft in raw material alone once you account for 15%–20% foam texture waste, or $2.10 to $3.40/sq ft after renting a 3,000 PSI airless sprayer and paying labour—with zero certified inspector sign-off). By comparison, Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc. supplies and installs certified 18-mil WFT (12-mil DFT) IFTI DC315® for $1.75 to $3.25 per sq ft complete with our CCMC #14036-R Municipal Inspector Binder, or $4.25 to $7.50 per sq ft for our Single-Source Turnkey 2 lb Closed-Cell SPF + 18-Mil DC315 Package. Call (647) 333-3626 or check your price in 60 seconds at spfsolutions.ca/price-chat.
In almost all Ontario municipalities, DIY or general-painter roller application over spray polyurethane foam is rejected by building inspectors for two reasons: first, a paint roller cannot build a uniform 18.0-mil Wet Film Thickness (12.0-mil DFT) across contoured foam without sagging in the valleys and leaving thin 4-to-6 mil peaks; second, municipal officials enforcing Ontario Building Code Section 3.1.4.2 and Section 9.10.17.10 require a signed Certified Applicator Compliance Certificate, wet-film notch-gauge photos, and calibrated dry-film thickness logs from a licensed contractor like Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc. Call (647) 333-3626 or visit spfsolutions.ca/price-chat.
At the standard CCMC #14036-R and CAN/ULC-S124 thermal barrier thickness of 18.0 mils Wet Film Thickness (12.0 mils Dry Film Thickness at 67% volume solids), the theoretical coverage on a perfectly flat test board is 89.1 sq ft per US gallon (445 sq ft per 5-gallon pail). However, when sprayed over real-world contoured polyurethane foam texture, surface ripples and atomization loss reduce net coverage to 355 to 390 sq ft per 5-gallon pail (71 to 78 sq ft per gallon). Municipal inspectors routinely audit pail consumption logs against total square footage to verify that full 12-mil DFT coverage was achieved.
To pass municipal fire and building inspections in Ontario, the thermal barrier coating must be specifically tested over the installed spray foam brand. Our Caliber Certified (CAN/ULC-S705.2 Licensed) Installers and IFTI Certified crews install BASF Walltite® Eco v.3, Huntsman Building Solutions (Icynene/Demilec), Johns Manville & other approved CCMC spray foam chemicals — Low-VOC HFO Blown, paired with IFTI DC315® (CCMC #14036-R), No-Burn® Plus ThB, Flame Control No. 60-60A & other approved CAN/ULC-S124 thermal barrier coatings.
Because IFTI DC315® is a heavy-bodied, high-solids (67% volume solids) intumescent coating that must never be thinned with water, it cannot be sprayed with a residential hardware-store airless pump. Proper atomization requires a commercial airless sprayer rated for 3,000 to 3,300 PSI with a minimum flow rate of 1.25 GPM (such as a Graco Mark V or TexSpray rig), all manifold and gun filters removed, a 3/8" ID high-pressure hose, and a 0.019" to 0.023" reversible airless tip.
When you book our Single-Source Turnkey 2 lb Closed-Cell SPF + 18-Mil DC315 Package ($4.25–$7.50/sq ft), Sprayfoam Solutions Toronto Inc. mobilizes one unified crew, one scissor-lift rental window, and one polyethylene masking setup—saving 20% to 30% compared to hiring an insulation contractor and a separate fireproofing painter. Even better, our Caliber Certified sprayers lay down smooth ≤2.0" closed-cell foam passes that eliminate popcorn texture waste and guarantee 100% inter-coat adhesion. Check your turnkey price at spfsolutions.ca/price-chat or call (647) 333-3626.
IFTI DC315® is a water-based latex intumescent emulsion (0°C / 32°F freeze point) that must be stored and transported between 10°C and 32°C (50°F–90°F). If a 5-gallon pail freezes even once inside an unheated courier trailer during an Ontario winter, the intumescent resin separates irreversibly, rendering the coating unusable and voiding its CCMC #14036-R fire rating. Our commercial fleet stores all DC315 inventory in heated warehousing and transports pails to your jobsite in heated rigs.
